Mk 3 vestibule litter bin arrangement

Mk 3 vestibule litter bin arrangement

Pickersgill-Kaye and Maintrain Ltd have come up with a solution to the current problems with the litter bins on Midland Mainline's MK3 HST's and developed a more robust and reliable design. The existing bin comprised of a door fastened directly to a GRP cavity. The main problems identified were that the door hinge easily became loose causing the door to become mis-aligned, the locking mechanism for the door was very weak and the door itself needed strengthening. Additionally, the bag retaining frame failed to hold the bag resulting in litter falling to the bottom.

As a result we have designed a fully enclosed bin made from galvanised steel which fits into the existing GRP cavity, allowing large hollow panel fastenings to be used down each side of the bin therefore retaining the whole assembly rigidly. The hinge is fastened directly to the enclosure and the door is secured using a more robust latch operated by BR carriage key. The retaining frame has been designed to prevent the bag from falling.

The visible areas of the bin particularly the door and flap can be supplied in any RAL or NCS colour to meet individual Train Operators requirements.

Field trials for this product are currently ongoing on Midland Mainline, Virgin Cross Country and GNER trains.
