Pickersgill Kaye's skirt panel locks were originally fitted to the Alstom built classes 465 and 466 EMU's built in 1992 and are now being supplied for the trains being built for the Virgin West Coast Mainline.
For the West Coast Mainline, two opposite hand locks are fitted per panel. The locks comprise of a powder painted aluminium dish and handle. The handle is locked in its vertical position to indicate the panel is securely fixed and can only be released using a BR carriage key. The keyhole is gated to prevent unauthorised access.
The main advantages of the latest locks are their weight, only 1.3Kg per unit, and low unit cost. These benefits were realised due to the significant quantities required for this particular contract.
